Silenced Twice: The pain of male rape in Ghana

The Ghana music industry was dealt a devastating blow on July 6, 2014 when a legend  disappeared under strange circumstances while on vacation in Ada, near the Volta River. 

Theophilus Tagoe, better known as Castro De Destroyer, was a force to be reckoned with in the Ghanaian music industry. 

Born on May 5, 1982, Castro grew up in Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana, a vibrant community that nurtured his talent.

He burst onto the music scene in 2003 with his hit single "Sradenam," and from that moment on, he was unstoppable. His music became the anthems at dance floors in and across Ghana.

Over the next decade, Castro delivered a series of hits, from the danceable tunes of "Toffee" to the chart-topping collaboration "Adonai" with Sarkodie.

 His collaborations with other prominent artists such as D Black, Mzbel, and 4X4 solidified his reputation as the man with the Midas touch.

 Industry experts hailed him as a musical genius, and his awards, including the Hiplife Artiste of the Year in 2006 and Best Hiplife Song of the Year in 2011, testified to his immense talent.

 Castro’s disappearance left a void that has yet to be filled, and a decade later, the impact of his absence is still deeply felt.

Caleb Nii Boye, a respected Ghanaian entertainment journalist, shared his insights on the long-term effects of Castro's disappearance.  According to Caleb, Castro's absence created a significant gap in the music industry. 

“He would have done greater things for the Ghana music industry if he was alive looking at the numbers “Adonai” has accumulated over the years… I wish we could have a concert to honor him and create some sort of closure so that Ghanaians can finally accept his departure”  he said.

 The years following Castro's disappearance saw a noticeable shift in the Ghanaian music landscape. While new talents emerged and the industry continued to evolve, there was a palpable sense of something missing. Castro's versatility and ability to create timeless hits had set a high bar, and many artists found it challenging to replicate his success.

 Despite his absence, Castro's influence continues to rumble through the industry.  

A decade on, the industry still feels the echo of his influence, a reminder of a star whose light shone brightly and continues to illuminate the path for future generations of musicians.
